BIO Ian Read

Ian is one of South Africa’s most experienced and respected wilderness guides, with over two decades of experience in leading rites of passage and leadership development programs for youth and adults from across the globe. His journey began in the early 1990s guiding trails in the Sabi Sands and Umfolozi Game Reserves. In 1996, he joined the renowned Wilderness Leadership School, a program rooted in spiritual and philosophical principles of reconnection—with the Earth, with humanity, and with spirit.

Throughout his career, Ian has worked closely with communities living near wilderness areas and has witnessed firsthand the healing power of nature to mend the rifts between people and the natural world. He believes this reconnection is vital for peace—within ourselves and with the planet.

Ian designs and facilitates small, customized wilderness experiences across Southern Africa, focused on personal transformation, leadership, and youth development. His approach strips away ego and complexity, inviting participants into a space of simplicity, surrender, and unity with all life.

Through deep immersion in nature, Ian helps individuals reflect on what they are truly called to give to the world. His work inspires growth, awakens purpose, and plants seeds of transformation that continue long after the journey ends.
