Otto Scharmer
Senior Lecturer | Author | Founder
Otto Scharmer is a visionary educator and facilitator dedicated to human-centered transformation. As the author of Theory U and Leading from the Emerging Future, he has spent over 20 years guiding leaders through deep systemic change. His work emphasizes empathy, listening, and the power of collective wisdom to shape a more just and sustainable future.
Scharmer’s journey began on a small farm near Hamburg, where his father practiced regenerative agriculture. These early lessons in nurturing the soil deeply influenced his understanding of leadership as the cultivation of social fields—environments where people can grow, connect, and co-create. Just as healthy soil supports life, healthy relationships support meaningful change.
Through his roles at MIT, the Presencing Institute, and the u-school for Transformation, Scharmer has inspired a global movement focused on shifting from ego-systems to eco-systems. He works with leaders across sectors to respond to today’s most pressing challenges with presence, compassion, and courage.
At the core of his philosophy is a belief in the human spirit—its resilience, creativity, and capacity for renewal. In uncertain times, he invites leaders to slow down, listen deeply, and act from a place of shared purpose, enabling change that truly serves people and the planet.
