Simon Javan Okelo is a Kenyan-born cultural entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and artist dedicated to empowering communities through creativity, technology, and storytelling. Raised in the slums of Manyatta in Kisumu, Kenya, Simon began his journey as a humanitarian, directing projects across Africa with Solace International and the Young Generation Centre. He later founded One Vibe Africa, a nonprofit bridging African and global communities through music, education, and the arts.
Since moving to the U.S. in 2010, Simon has organized global events and digital campaigns, including the Madaraka Festival, which celebrates African culture and diaspora talent. The festival has featured renowned artists such as Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Sauti Sol, and Blitz The Ambassador. Simon’s work spans nonprofits, corporate logistics, and digital media strategy, with collaborations including the Gates Foundation, Seattle Art Museum, and Standard Media Group.
A published author and performing artist, Simon plays the eight-string Nyatiti, combining traditional music with contemporary storytelling. He is also the founder of a children’s African storytelling series and has mentored over twenty emerging leaders. Now based in the U.S. and a father of three, Simon dedicates himself full-time to creative entrepreneurship, building bridges between Seattle and Africa through art, leadership, and innovation.
