Galileo Commission Senior Research, Physicist
Vasileios Basios Scholar | Philosopher | Theorist

Dr. Vasileios Basios is a senior researcher in the Physics of Complex Systems Department at the University of Brussels, with over 25 years of experience in interdisciplinary science and academic mentorship. His research focuses on self-organisation, emergence in complex matter, and the philosophical and foundational aspects of complex systems science.

During his formative years, he worked with Nobel laureates Ilya Prigogine and Grégoire Nicolis at the Solvay Institutes for Physics and Chemistry, and earned his Ph.D. after studying cybernetics under John S. Nicolis. His academic interests include nonlinear dynamics, chaos in biological systems, computability, and the logic of extended Bayesian inference.

Dr. Basios is especially passionate about the history and evolution of scientific thought. He advocates for a shift beyond the traditional mechanistic worldview, envisioning a more integrative and self-reflective scientific paradigm. His work bridges complexity science and consciousness research, aiming to foster robust, adaptable networks of researchers, organizations, and ideas.

He is a former co-Chair and current speaker for the Scientific & Medical Network, a member of the Galileo Commission Steering Team, and a Trustee of the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL). In 2023, his team was awarded the inaugural Linda G. O’Bryant Noetic Sciences Research Prize.
