Anne Baring, PhD (Hons), born in 1931, is a historian and Jungian analyst whose work explores the spiritual, psychological, and mythological foundations of human consciousness. Deeply affected by World War II, she was driven to understand the religious, political, and emotional forces behind both cruelty and altruism. After graduating from Oxford in 1956, she traveled to India and the Far East, commissioned to collect photographs of Asian art for an Italian encyclopedia. These journeys led her to study Hinduism and Buddhism and awakened a lifelong spiritual quest.
This formative period deepened her understanding of many religious traditions, including Christianity, and inspired her first book, The One Work: A Journey Towards the Self. She later worked as a fashion designer in London, drawing inspiration from Indian textiles, before personal challenges led her to Jungian analysis and, eventually, to training as a Jungian analyst.
In the 1980s, she co-authored The Myth of the Goddess with analyst Jules Cashford, examining the shift in the sacred image from feminine to masculine and its long-term impact on Western consciousness and the ecological crisis. Her latest book (May 2025) is titled Divine Wisdom and The Holy Spirit: The Forgotten Feminine Face of God.
She shared a long creative life with her husband, artist Robin Baring.
